SCOM Quick Tutorial.

1. What is SCOM?

System center operations Manager.
SCOM is part of the Microsoft System center suite.
It is a tool which allows you to monitor computer, network devices, services from a single console.

MOM2000,
MOM2005, SP1
SCOM 2007 SP1,R2, CU1 to CU7
SCOM 2012 SP1, R2


3. New features of SCOM 2012.

Allows monitoring of networking devices.
Allows application performance monitoring.
Resource Pool concept, lets see balance the work load across multiple MS.
Eliminate concept of RMS, which was earlier cause of downtime incase of single point failure.

5. Min system requirement for SCOM 2007
Ops DB/DW/Reporting, MS,GW, Console (Windows 2003 sp1)
Agent Win2k sp4, winxpsp2
Atleast 2GB ram on MS and 4gb on RMS.

7. Setting up SCOM Environment


8. Upgrade from SCOM 2007 to scom 2012.
There are four upgrade scenarious i.e.
Simple Single: All roles are installed on single machine.
Simple Distributed: SCOM ROles are installed on different machines.
complex single: single server but clustered
complex distributed: distributed roles in clustered environment.


9. Accounts used in SCOM
Operations Manager Administrator account
Management Server Action account,
SDK and Configuration Service account,
Data Reader account,
Data Warehouse Write Action account,


10. Setting up Gateway Server
there should be a certificate from same root authority, install on both gateway and MS.
you run momcertimport.exe to on both server.
run gatewayapproval tool on MS
install MS.


11. Can the gateway point to any MS or it has to be RMS?
Gateway can point to any Management Server

12. Services that run on RMS,MS and Agent.

13. What is Operational Database?

The Operational Database is the repository for all operational (alert and event) data reported by Agents, as well as

configuration information for those agents. All data entered and retrieved in the database is handled by the OpsMgr SDK

Service.


14. What is Reporting Database?
The Reporting Database is an optional component that if installed will serve as the repository for all performance and event

data. Historically, all data was written to the OnePoint database and then transferred periodically to the Reporting

Database. With OpsMgr, performance data is automatically written to the Reporting database (if installed).

sends out management pack to the server.

executes the work flows.
stores the data locally

maintains the change,

22. Diference between Alert generating and collection Rule?
Based on a certain condition, alert is generated and shown in alert view, However collection rule only collects the data and

dumps it in db.


23 What is Audit collection service?

It collects security event logs on the computers that acs forwarder is enabled on.
